South Side was recently awarded a PA Harvest of the Month grant to promote local agricultural products monthly through the food services department. Our Food Services Director, Ms. DeSarro, worked alongside two of our middle school clubs to celebrate April's featured Harvest of the Month product - MICROGREENS. Mr. Logan's Greenhouse Club planted and harvested two different varieties of microgreens that Ms. Batchelor's Delicious Dish Club incorporated into recipes for a Chopped competition.
Each team of chefs created a dish featuring the "secret ingredient" and presented it for judging based on their presentation, creativity, taste, and use of the microgreens. Our judges sampled Loaded Avocado Toast with Greens, an Egg Salad and Greens Sandwich, and a Blueberry, Quinoa, and Microgreen Power Salad. The winning recipe was "Quick Gaspacho with Microgreens" created by Racheal Goebbel, Madelyn Beaumont, Reagen Kelly, and Aria Lacasella. Congratulations to our winning team!
