PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
SCHOOL HEALTH DIVISION
MANDATORY SCREENING PROGRAM

DENTAL EXAMINATION

The School Health Code of Pennsylvania requires that a dental examination be performed at specific grade levels, school entry (K or 1), grades 3 and 7. These represent critical periods of your child's development. The school district strongly recommends private dental examination as your family health care provider can best evaluate your child's health and assist in obtaining the necessary treatment and corrections.

GROWTH SCREENING

Growth Screening is conducted on all students in Grades K – 12. A growth screening letter will be sent home to all parents of students in Grades K – 12. This will include the Body Mass Percentile which is used as a guideline to help assess whether a person may be overweight or underweight. This notification will be expanded annually until all 12 grades are included.

HEARING SCREENING

Hearing Screening is conducted on all students in Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 7, and 11. This screening is not a substitute for an audiology examination by your health care provider. If your child's screening is unsatisfactory, a hearing referral letter will be mailed home.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

The School Health Code of Pennsylvania requires that a physical examination be performed at specific grade levels, school entry (K or 1), grades 6 and 11. These represent critical periods of your child's development. The school district strongly recommends private physical examination as your family health care provider can best evaluate your child's health and assist in obtaining the necessary treatment and corrections.

SCOLIOSIS SCREENING

Scoliosis is a lateral and rotary curve of the spine. Scoliosis screening is conducted on all middle school students in conjunction with the physical education department. An informational class on scoliosis is presented to all 6th grade students prior to the screening procedure and written information is given to each student to share with their parent/guardians. If you have any questions regarding this screening, please contact the middle school nurse. If a student’s scoliosis screening is unsatisfactory, the student’s parent/guardian will be notified.

VISION SCREENING

Vision Screening is conducted on all students in Grades K-12. This screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye examination by an eye care specialist. If your child's screening is unsatisfactory, a vision referral letter will be mailed home.
